Awalou Ouedraogo is an Associate Professor of International Law and Chair of the Department of Human Rights and Equity Studies, at York University in Toronto, Canada. He is also a visiting Professor at University of Panthéon Assas, Paris, France and University Thomas Sankara, Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
Professor Ouedraogo holds a PhD in international law from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, Geneva, Switzerland.
His research interests include history, philosophy and theory of international law, human rights and international humanitarian law, and the state formation in Africa.
Professor Ouedraogo has widely published on human rights and international law theory. His recent peer reviewed article focuses on the “Rights to International Solidarity”, Quebec Journal of International Law, vol. 35:2 (2023). His latest book is titled Due Diligence in International Law. Toronto: De Sitter Press, 2021, 305 pages.
Professor Ouedraogo is a member of several scholarly associations, including the Association France/Canada d'études stratégiques (AFCES), the Centre interdisciplinaire de recherche en développement international et société (CIRDIS), and the Center for Refugee Studies. Since 2009, he has taken part in several international colloquia and other scientific meetings. Professor Ouedraogo is actively involved with the United Nations as human rights expert.
Fluent in English, French, Moré and Dioula, Professor Ouedraogo is a Knight of the National Order of Burkina Faso since December 2021.
