I am honoured to be named Founding President of the Canadian Institute for Human Rights and Global Health. Many of the initiatives that I’ve supported and/or founded personally or professionally, over the span of my life and career, have been centered around humanitarian work, social justice advocacy and international relations. I feel extremely privileged to be entrusted with fulfilling the mission of this international centre of excellence in its mission to bring together experts from across the globe in support of education, public policy initiatives, and research in defense of human rights and global health.
In teaming up with partners who have become proud Fellows of our institute, we are building an international centre of scholars and experts. Many of our Fellows are affiliated with international organizations such as the United Nations, prestigious human rights organizations, academic centres focused on global health and post-secondary institutions, offering us the opportunity to tap into a vast pool of knowledge and expertise that allows us to continue to expand our network of experts, and develop future prospects for our own research and education in Canada.
As a collective group working in partnership with a common goal, we will add to the international collaboration that is already underway; complementing the work of organizations, in Canada and beyond, that are focused on similar values, objectives and outcomes. Adding to that is the fact that the institute is generating a high level of interest amidst higher education and research circles in various countries. This is a testament of the need for more focus in these areas of research and academia.
This is an exciting opportunity for me personally, and for Huntington University with whom the Canadian Institute for Human Rights and Global Health is affiliated. We have the chance to form remarkable connections with international colleagues as well as influence change by contributing to a growing and global body of work committed to the preservation and promotion of international human rights and global health.
